Meh.
Mexico would have become part of the United States in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War had northern senators not objected to all of that land and population being added to the South's slave bloc. Instead we compromised, allowing Mexico to keep her sovereignty in exchange for giving up California and the entirety of the American southwest. Manifest Destiny was achieved and Mexico itself was not needed.
