Speaking only for myself, I am okay with what the country and her citizens do for us vets. I'm a recent retiree, though, and I was neither a complete frickup nor got completely fricked up. I imagine life is considerably tougher for those two demographics.
My biggest recommendation to the people who want to do more is to hire young veterans and Guardsmen/Reservists. The frickups will wash out quickly, but the rest should have decent work ethic, ability to adapt, and can be challenged to meet their potential.
