I'm not saying this to justify or persuade, just to give you the route the Biden admin is taking on this.
They want to stop Russia from invading key partner states. They absolutely do not want to have to go to war with Russia or to even really get to the pre-war posturing.
Thus we get proxy war.
Much cheaper than a real conflict, no bodies, achieves some strategic objectives, keeps friends in the "defense" industries very happy.
With Putin wanting to be seize parts (or all) of neighboring states, we were always going to go back to a cold war. Russia is probably about as strong now as the USSR was in the 80s, so the same strategy is deployed.
Yes, 10 billion, 50 billion, one hundred billion. Sounds like a lot. The US military budget is almost a trillion each year.

Exactly. And it’s not like the US is just writing Ukraine a blank check. A major portion of what they’re sending are weapons which the manufacturers are loving. It’s the US war machine in full scale and no US soldiers will be harmed.
