My father gave me some wise but wasteful advice growing up...
Always buy new vehicles.
We fought second hand broke down cars my entire childhood.
Since 22, I've bought 6 new vehicles. Never bought a used one. Always had them serviced at the dealerships. Never had any major issues.
Always had a car note though. So one problem solved created another.
Most expensive was a loaded out Subaru Ascent: $50K. I will not spend over $50K on a new vehicle. Personal rule.

I usually look for a 2-3 year old car with around 30-40 thousand miles. That seems to be the sweet spot as far saving some money but still getting 100,000 miles with little service needed.
