Employees cost businesses money (taxes, benefits, etc). Business wise it would make sense to decrease “employees” which would be detrimental to many players/sports.

It is also true that there are a lot of actual student-athletes out there who parlay an athletic scholarship into a degree. Just not really on competitive teams
