You're half right. The broadcast is ALWAYS pre-recorded. The live audience gets the live show, but some artists lip sync both. Even Whitney Houston's anthem was pre recorded, as was Chris Stapleton's vocals and guitar. Artists don't have a choice, no matter how big they are, it's in the contract. Some artists make it sound more "raw" for more of a live show feel, but on TV, You're never hearing the actual mic or instruments live.

Lady Gaga didn't, and yes its a choice the artist can make.
