I really like the idea of using hydrogen, but I think it is only viable as grid storage for excess wind/solar/wave/whatever output. As of now wind turbine output for example is often curtailed because there's no cheap way to store it. And although handling hydrogen is expensive, at scale it might be able to compete vs lithium batteries or other storage methods. It's not all that efficient to electrolyze water only to run the hydrogen back through a fuel cell, but if the energy would be wasted otherwise then it's a net gain.
