I think they can be very helpful in people who don't get a marked improvement from talk therapy alone or are in life situations where environmental changes don't improve the situation (i.e. post-partum for example).
I do think they're overprescribed and can be a bandaid for what the root cause of their depression may be. I've seen my fair share of returning clients who initially quit therapy early on because "change" wasn't happening fast enough for their liking but then showed back up when the anti-depressant didn't solve all of their problems.
