The train is awesome, and it’s unbelievable scenery. If you’re strapped for time, but still want to do this, schedule a half day. The railroad will shuttle you to Silverton, and you can ride the train back down. It’s 7-8 hours round trip on the train, or three hours altogether, plus usually an hour or so to putz around in Silverton if you do the shuttle.

Mesa Verde is definitely cool, I’d see about finding a guide for that if you go. You can drive through yourself, but I don’t know that you’d get as much out of it that way
