If you're looking for a mafia feel, try Sparks Steakhouse on East 46th. Paul Castellano was gunned down on the curb right outside the restaurant.
It's also been there forever and has a good atmosphere. The steak is good, too, like so many steakhouses in New York. I prefer Smith & Wallensky's but there are many to choose from.

Agreed on Sparks.
I do think Peter Luger's should be on your list for nostalgia purposes. It is definitely a unique experience that has been around for years. The food is solid. If you are looking for a good steak and do not care about ambiance or nostalgia, there are many other just as good, if not better options mentioned in this thread.
