Dufresne might have been low key, but he absolutely was NOT the least bit timid at any point in the film. IMO, he’s one of the most admirable and courageous characters in film history.
He didn’t breakdown the first night at Shawshank like Red expected, fought back against the Sisters (even taunted them), never moped around in spite of having a very promising future unjustly stripped from him, defiantly turned the music up when the guards told him to cut it off, and had the balls to risk his life escaping through a tight shitpipe.
