The point was that it would take an insane deal to give him up to a division rival.
Sean's lap dog already said he's not going to get in the way of him coaching. Now Payton's on national tv sending threats about how its a mid-late first and the compensation goes way down if they don't get it done this offseason.
In the end i think the return for Payton will be fine. I just think certain people's expectations are way out of whack, including the idea of there being some huge extra cost for Carolina. If Loomis actually had a backbone he wouldn't even let Payton talk to division teams.
I don't expect him to find his spine, or dignity, at the negotiating table. I'd love to be wrong.

He raises the price to the point where Carolina passes. I thought that was obvious.

I’d trade his rights to some team he doesn’t wanna go to and let them figure it out
