More like Toyota figured out a way to screw up a very good engine. Toyota went to a low-tension ring package, for fuel economy and lower viscosity oils, and it has caused oil consumption issues. You can still get 300k miles out of the engine but the oil burning only gets worse with time. Whoever rebuilds it needs to know about the issue and set the engine up with an improved ring package.
