Sounds like poor money management.

Also, to the other poster, the medical bills from all this will be covered by the NFL.

They will be covered today, for this specific event, yes.

If he has any medical expenses related to this after he is out of the NFL, assuming he does not return and play another season to earn vesting status, he will have to cover those himself.
