Very concise summary of the monopolistic utility business model.
There's essentially zero incentive to do anything beyond the minimum and utilities are rivaled only by the government for their inefficiency and laziness. I've worked with a dozen of them and they're all basically like the DMV.

This is why decentralized power generation/storage interests me greatly. Be it solar panel roof tiles and Tesla batteries or some alternative, I think being able to operate your home when the public grid is at capacity and even being laid to give energy back to the grid sounds wonderful.
