Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, about the Lewis & Clark expedition after the Louisiana Purchase, is a good one. It's not about the mass migrations to the west, but it's the start of the story of American westward expansion.

I recently read Undaunted Courage and really enjoyed it. Building off of that I ordered Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire, but it hasn’t come in yet so I can’t comment.
