It has nothing to do with game performance in a bowl game, when a player already has tape for 12, 24, or 36 games.

Bowl games used to be a more significant part of that process, even the ones not directly affecting the national championship. Lots of good bowl game performances (when everyone was watching) moved guys up on draft day and made them millions of dollars
