Except he IS wasting spot because it stays vacant if someone quits after Affirmation before the start of their junior year. If your dream is playing in the NFL then go somewhere else and get commissioned later on.
The spot stays vacant for the remainder of the year then it is filled with the incoming class of plebes. This goes for anyone that quits or is told to leave.
Seems like a lot throughout this thread are confusing delaying mandatory service versus eliminating mandatory service component.
