Bingo. This is what a lot of people here are missing.
Altering commitments isn’t some unheard of thing in the military. Palace Chase in the AF allows people to convert their remaining active duty commitment to an ANG/Reserve commitment. And in theory it’s available to everyone (as long as you meet the requirements of course).
Carter still wants to serve, he just wants to do it differently, and the military has always allowed for this.
