Switzerland is one of my favorite places but I wouldn't pick Zermatt to live even with those views. Not a single private car in the town and you have to take a train to get anywhere else. I appreciate public transportation but I don't like it to be the only option. Living on either the Swiss or French side of Lake Geneva would be incredible though.

The Castello area of Venice is cheap, no cars, no crime, and very little tourists make it out that way. Of course I would suggest living on the second floor.
