I've driven the Road to Hana twice and in my experience it's the idiot tourists whom cannot drive that cause the problems. I don't have the want to do it again because of them.
Definitely get started early, especially if you want to try the best ribs on the Island at Braddah Hutts bbq.

I had a couple local drivers in beater cars getting on my arse doing 60 mph and you know that road ain't meant to be driven at that speed. Sped pass me and then had another one coming at us in the opposite direction and I told my wife I ain't swerving to miss him I am in the Rubcon jeep and he was in a red POS toyota corolla
