Thats a good point.

A major point of Part 2 is putting the player in the shoes of a tit for tat, eye for an eye dynamic.

Yea I get that and I playing as Abby went through the emotional arc that Druckmann had in mind. What I was suggesting would add another layer as if Abby was friend at first, she would have to deal with her own conflict with killing Joel.

It kinda reminded me of Alien 3 where these characters I loved are wiped out in the beginning so instead of engaging in the story and the themes I just spend time being pissed they are gone. IDK...in time I grew to appreciate that movie as well so maybe I will learn to appreciate TLoU2 story more as well too.

I think what you are talking about though would be a completely different story. And one that puts the player more in the role of an observer instead of real-time emotional participant, which the game successfully did, even if people hated the feeling.

I mean that is literally the point here. You are pissed in the way Ellie is pissed at losing this important person in her life in a brutal and unexpected way(even if she has conflicted feelings about him cause of his actions, actions which robbed her of her agency and sense of purpose, conflicted but still loved, similar to how many people felt about Joel after the first game).

Interestingly, Ellie's rage-induced and whirlwind of dehumanization and retaliation toward the perpetrators in reaction to Joel's death was incredibly prescient in that it's EXACTLY how so many fans also reacted. They went beyond being angry in the game's framework, they actually went into fits of uncontrollable rage IRL, dehumanizing the creators, and seeking to destroy the reputation and everything about the game any way they could...much like Ellie. The game than asks isn't Abby literally doing what you did for Joel? And if no one can stop the cycle how can healing begin and humanity ever return? Individually or collectively?

I feel like even years after a lot of people are still in the bargaining phase of grief and trying to rationalize ways to change the story into one where they get to keep Joel, or at least lessen the blow. But that becomes a different narrative, with a lesser impact, and to me, a much less interesting story.
