Our WR is overloaded with talent with more on the way in the 2023 class. No way they all stay.

I feel like no matter who decides to enter the transfer portal, regardless of position, this same "overloaded with talent" comment always comes up.

At some point you have to realize it isn’t true, or if it is, it’s never good to lose someone who has experience with the team.

What? We’ve only got Malik, BTJ, maybe Lacy, and Hilton coming back, off injury. We were actually pretty thin at WR this year, depth wise. Our top 4 were maybe the best group in the country, but there was a pretty big drop off after that. We were really lucky they stayed healthy all year.

Bech would probably be the #3 going into the spring. His down year was 100% due to missing all fall with shin splints and missing out on not just practice reps, but the opportunity to develop chemistry with Daniels, and his back injury limiting during the season.

I’d be surprised if this is true. Bech is a life-long LSU fan who seems like the kind of competitor that would use this season as motivation to come back better than ever. And Kelly obviously loves him, he took him to the SEC Media Days as a sophomore and talked about how mature he was and how he knew how to prepare at an unusually high level, etc…He heaped a ton of praise on him very early on.

However, Kelly is going to be brutally honest with everybody. Maybe Jack got down and had a bad attitude or there was something else going on we didn’t know about and told him he was gonna have to work his arse off to change that.

Or maybe he told him that since we’re thin at veteran WRs, he’s going to aggressively go after some in the portal that he will have to compete against, and he doesn’t want to risk falling down to 5th or 6th on the depth chart and feels like he has to go somewhere that throws the ball more and where he’ll be guaranteed to be higher on the depth chart.

I definitely hope he stays and would be surprised if he left. But nothing would shock me in 2022 CFB.

WR is overloaded

People need to stop repeating this, because it’s not actually the case.

We’ll be strong at WR again next year. Nabers, Thomas, and either Kyren lacy or chris Hilton or a true freshman. Again—very strong group— but that is NOT “overloaded”. Strong at the top, minimal depth.

After next year, when nabers and Thomas bounce… we’re left with zero proven guys. You hope that one of the guys in this incoming class can step up to be THE guy as a true sophomore, but that’s just one guy. The odds that we’ll have multiple guys in a single WR class—even a stacked one—who are legit difference makers as true sophomores are low. We effectively have zero WRs in our current freshman class. So losing a likely 4yr guy in the class above HURTS.

The bottom line is that we’re unlikely to be WEAK at WR anytime soon. But it’s not even remotely accurate to say that we’re overloaded. Losing bech would be a huge blow to depth.

Is that group really as talented as we think?
Is any position on this team overloaded with talent?

Too bad there’s no one to throw them the ball.
