Not necessarily. The real bigtime firms have offices all over the country and the offices not in LA/DC/NY pay associates a similar if not identical salary/bonus. You can probably clear close to 200k total comp in Dallas, Atlanta, or Houston straight out of school if you have the resume.
Now I imagine the partners probably make WAY more in the bigger markets.
