There's a point of diminishing returns. My dad passed away from multiple myeloma. During the latter stages he was oblivious to what was going on around him due to the massive amount of painkillers they had him on.

If you're able to function, and work, great. If you're bedridden and sucking up money, you aren't doing your young children any favors by hanging around for 3 years forcing in many cases them to assist in your care, and draining away things like college funds, and basic necessities.

Better to just move on and leave them with a trusted family member, or worst case a friend willing to take the burden along with a trust fund in whatever funds you've saved for your retirement. The kids will be better off in the long run.
