This is coming from a backpacker. Don’t buy him a tent, give him money and let him pick the tent. If you are dead set on it talk to him and get a better idea of the weight he wants.

If you are dead set on a tent MSR Hubba or Hennessy Hammock might be a good option.

If you have a 100-150 budget maybe look at cooking systems or sleeping pads, trail runners, etc

My man here is giving you solid advice. For a serious hiker, weight is key. Buying a good quality tent that is light will be over $200. Give him a gift certificate to REI and let him order what he wants.

Solid advice, but he's 13 and will use the tent when he's at camp in June (eta- not just this June, he'll be going to camp for many summers to come). Probably won't get much use of it during the year- that's why i'm looking for good quality, but not too expensive. His use of it will be when he goes on overnight-two night paddling trips and cabin overnights. He's more into that than the extended backpacking trips, but it's also not out of the question. Like the cooking system idea, too, but the camp provides those.

We could have him pick it out but it's for his Christmas gift
