What are some examples of games that you play? What is your target resolution? What is your target display size?

Used to play Counter Strike and Command and Conquer. Have been on consoles past several years.

I need a new cpu to do some rudimentary work tasks but figure I might as well have it suitable to play games as well. I travel regularly, so a laptop is more practical than a desktop for me.

What are some examples of games that you want to play on the laptop in the future? What is your target resolution? What is your target display size?

I have no particular game in mind. I am more into not being limited in the near future.

Was expecting a 16" but 17" is fine too. Not overly concerned about the extra weight.

We occasionally use the laptop to watch movies while traveling. I am not sure what resolution my eyes can detect true differences. I expect whatever I get for 1500-2000 will be sufficient quality.

The reason I'm being insistent on the game issue is that, as a rule, every game is either GPU bound or CPU bound, practically never really a blend of the two. Most games are GPU bound. However, many strategy games are CPU bound because of how many sprites are on the screen at once. Having an idea as to which is more important to you is helpful when trade offs are being made.

ETA: Just limiting myself to what's immediately available at a big box retailer like BestBuy, I would probably do something like this: LINK

If you're comfortable buying online, your options might open up a little bit.

Close to what I had been considering. See link below:

LINK

I saw someone post a link to slickdeals and quickly became overwhelmed with the options. I hate to make a purchase and find out I missed a better opportunity.

I am not opposed to buying online. Have done so before and likely will again at some point.

While RTS is probably my favorite genre, I would label it secondary for this discussion. There are too few games and they are generally easier to run, even if I have to run at a lower quality. I don't want to run a FPS at low quality.
