Depends on how much you want to lug around. And with women....
Up to them..
But..
Hawaii is very casual. With a washer and dryer, you don't need much. Take maybe a week's worth of clothing and do laundry.
The times I've been, just took casual beach type stuff, shorts, sandals, t-shirts etc. If you go out to dinner, lot of tourists go with the tacky Hawaiian shirt vibe, so I'm sure you'll want to get into the spirit as well. Maybe take one nice pair of pants, shirts, shoes etc. if you want to go to a nicer restaurant. Never had to wear a jacket for dinner, so it's pretty simple.

Thank ya. Been on a couple online sites with suggestions. When they say heavy coat for stargazing at the observatory..heavy shirt jack and gloves or. Full on winter coat?

Ok, now that'd be different. Are you just going to "The Big Island", or others as well.
Never been, but it gets cold up there.

Hell, for that matter, you could go snow skiing!

Same for taking the bike ride down Haleakala if you go to Maui.
Guess it depends on if you're going to do those things and what time of year.

So we did Haleakala. I packed one long sleeve shirt and jeans, and we took the comforter from our AirBNB and were fine.

We went to Kauai a few years ago for Thanksgiving week. Weather was pleasant. Wore sleeveless and shorts most of the time. Evenings were nice and not cold by any means.

I wouls tough it out with lighter outwear and just layer. Full on packing for cold weather for one day takes up a ton of space.

Two shorts, few t-shirts, couple of polos. Boat shoes, flip-flops. Pickup a cook street Hawaiian shirt on eBay, Jeans/slacks + fleece for going to elevation
you will be the best dressed howley on the island.
Go to L&L for plate lunch.

You can honestly do it with just a carry on. If you have a wadher/dryer then I wouldn't bring more than a few days worth of clothes. Maybe one or two nicer things if you plan on eating somewhere a bit more on the fancy side.

to be clear, nicer in 99% of Hawaii is your good aloha shirt.

I wear slacks and a nice shirt on the aircraft. I pack 2 pair swim trunks that look like nice shorts and are great to hike in, 5 t-shirts, flip-flops and 1 lightweight 1/4 zip pullover. If we eat someplace nice, I wear the clothes I flew in. t-shirt and shorts everywhere else.
We will usually pack a rolling duffle with beach stuff for everyone.

I brought a week worth of clothes, as did my wife when we went to Big Island in January. Shorts, bathing suit, tshirts and nice dress shirt and dress pants.
We went with us + 12 month old child + two grandmaws over the age of 60.
Brought a light jacket for when we stayed in Volcano, but we were coming from Alaska so the weather up there was nice at night and during the day.

If you go up Halaleaka to watch the sunrise, it will be in the low 30's. Make sure you get tickets from the park service before you go!
It will also be dark, so you may want a flashlight if you wish to climb to the top. We found a couple of puffy jackets that rolled up small. It was cold, no doubt.
Past there, half of what you take will never get worn. Like a cruise, I'd suggest packing, and theN taking half of that out!

I feel like i overpacked for oahu but maybe underpacked for maui. Still havent been to big island yet. What an amazing place this is. Almost seems like you have to go once to get your bearings and return a second time with an actual plan.
