It happened so fast that I couldn’t even tell where the line to gain actually was. I know where the yellow line was but that isn’t accurate all the time. The fact the ref immediately waved the chains makes me think the first down marker was actually short of the 35 (I believe that was the yard they were close to)

Yeah he was using the line as his marker. It was still close enough to spot it and maybe bring the chains out.

Dirty little ref secret. When you get a first down, they don't mark the ball exactly where you went down, they round to the yard line and reset the sticks. The line to gain for a first down is always coincident with a yard line, never in between.

from my seats it looked clearly short of the marker
