I'm not sure this is true. There were tons of forgotten players who tore and acl or had shoulder surgery who never played again. Also have to account for bigger talent pools now. There were many guys in the NBA decades ago with only 1 or 2 average skills who may have played for years. Now, unless you have at least 1 elite skill or multiple better than average skills you won't last in the league very long.
