S1 of the Sopranos hasn't aged well at all. Tony runs a guy down in broad daylight with a shitload of people around at the beginning of E1.

I’m not sure what you’re referring too. Tony didn’t kill anyone in episode 1. His first on screen kill was episode 8 (College) where he killed a guy in the middle of nowhere while meadow checked out colleges

And early on, they had the ability to get away with that kind of thing anyway. That’s kind of the whole point of the mob is they tie themselves into the community in a way to insulate themselves from the punishments from the shite they do.

Over time of the series, that power grip on the community continues to evaporate and the FBI ramps up their oversight which makes the crew have to adjust and trying to protect themselves as much as possible, eventually leading to Tony’s complete downfall into paranoia and ultimately the entire families downfall

ETA that’s not to say there aren’t moments that don’t require some suspension of disbelief. Tony running away from the raid on Johnny Sacks house is one of those types of things and its still one of my favorite scenes from the show
