Doesn't even need to be a whole floor. A couple of columns will do. Test it yourself. Stand on a coke can. Have a friend pluck it. Does it fall over at the bottom sideways? Nope. it crushes vertically.

I don't believe the towers fell because of a demolition but this is absolutely not true. Pressure from the top will push in a weakened surface and it will collapse to that side.
