While there is some truth to that obviously...
Madrid is one of the largest cities in Europe but isn't a prime tourist destination and really doesn't want to be. It doesn't have the "old stuff" that other cities have for the most part. Its cathedral was build in the early 1990's.
GREAT museums, great restaurants but thats about it. I also did not find the people in Madrid to be as nice as other parts of Spain. Its just not a tourist city at its heart.

Madrid did have the biggest and best Mercado (Mercado San Miguel) that I saw in any city in Spain. It was spectacular and the tapas scene in Madrid is also wonderful.
