After 9/11, Charles went to Ground Zero to volunteer his time to help those in need, and the doctors believe that his cancer was a result of him being exposed to various elements around Ground Zero.
When asked if he would have done anything differently, he said no...that he was called to do the Lord's work and wouldn't trade his experience for anything.
I am paraphrasing, but this is the gist of something I read about him in the last year or so in a Catholic-based publication in BR.
