in theory it was a good decision...

brees kills 6 secs...and we kick...

if we were afraid of sproles return, then we avoid a long punt to him.

but the problem was we put in a rookie kicker who ends up kicking to sproles anyway, and he gets a scarily good return...enouhg of one to set up a jumpball...

it was supposed to work out as a squib kick..they have the ball on their 35 or so with 3 secs....1 play....they can't reach the endzone on a single throw....

so good decision by payton.for the first time i got the impression that he was thinking through the situation and not just impetuously making calls...but he should have either recognized the shortcomings of his kicker or used someone else. or squib

that would have to have been one hell of a squib kick, we were kicking from the 20, they would have still gotten it close to midfield if we squibbed it.

I've always been a Payton supporter, but I actually thought he didn't have one of his better games today. Up 6 points, on a 4th and 2, on the 13 yard line, and we go for it? I know we got it, but if we didn't, that could have been detrimental. I know Mehlhaff missed that extra point, but it was a 30 yard field goal to put us up by 2 possessions. I thought it was unwarranted. Then when, I think Chambers caught that touchdown pass and we challenged it? I thought it was not even close enough to warrant, he easily had both knees inbounds. And finally, the safety. We basically just gave them 2 points and a chance to win. If we just punt in that situation, we can kick it high if we want or angle it, there was 14 seconds on the clock, and it would have easily gotten down to at the least, 8 seconds with the punt, maybe down to 5 depending if he tried to return it. Then, yes, they still get the one hail mary, but at worst, they make it, then have to kick the extra point to go to overtime, or go for 2 and the win.
