Wife and I just made this trip in late June, I highly recommend. We flew into Detroit and drove up to Mackinac. I advise to take the ferry out of St. Ignace rather than mackinac city, ( Take Shepplers) the boat far less crowded going out of SI. We stayed at mission point which was pretty nice. It wasn’t as fancy as the grand but not a bad place at all. We rented bikes for a day and had a nice dinner at 1852 Grill room which was well worth it, nice scenery and great food. I would say 2-3 days would be a perfect amount of time to stay.
After our stay at the island we drove through the Upper Peninsula and stopped at Pictured Rocks national lakeshore then headed into Green Bay and stayed for the night. The next morning we left GB and drove to Chicago spent a day there doing mostly touristy type things, went to a Red Sox v Cubs game at Wrigley and flew home the following morning. Overall it was a great trip. The scenery on the drive was decent but the destination a were awesome.
