There's no way they can feign surprise on this one. They 100% wanted a NC-17 rating based on the synopsises I've read.

There is apparently a very brief shot of an erect penis during one of the sex scenes. That alone is going to get you a NC-17 rating. You can show briefly show peen in an R rated movie but they have to be flaccid. You show an erect dick that's like insta NC-17.

There is a scene of an abortion where they show instruments being inserted, not even sure what that means exactly but that's how it was described. Once again, that sorta scene is pretty much like a nuclear bomb in terms of rating.

There are apparently two or three entirely different rape/sexual assault scenes.

If you wanna see Ana naked, like we all do, it's all in there, but sadly almost all the sexual content in the movie is presented in a sort of a sad, violent, or vulgar way. It's not really the good type of sex scenes the audience would actually want to see.
