nobody in monroe really cared

I never really understood this whole concept that having a school in your backyard was not worthy of supporting locally, but honestly, when LSU started winning in football, supporting them became the cool thing to do. I use football as the benchmark since athletics is the front porch to the house at any college. If your front porch looks like crap, nobody will want to come visit. It didn't help matters that NLU and then ULM went into a losing abyss in football that it still can't seem to get out of. I am not knocking that one bit either with Monroe people supporting LSU. LSU is the flagship school and I get that. However, NLU was like that ugly kid at the dance that never gets asked to dance except when they are the only option or ie....when you fail out at LSU. Then Tech started going after Ouachita Parish kids and the nails started to go in the coffin.

There was one shining moment in 2012 when the stars aligned in Monroe. It was when they beat a #3 Arkansas, took Auburn to the wire, and by the grace of God made a bowl game. It was a Cinderella season and from what I heard, was a windfall at the school for attendance numbers the following semester and year. People actually like to support winners. Who knew? You would think that the admin at ULM would rally and support the football program but sadly, it was right back to the gutter. Maybe now, the school will gets it shite together under Bowden but I sadly think, the first winning season he pulls off, he is gone.
