Without luggage, it's a doable walk from the train station but if you're in a rush a taxi shouldn't be more than 8-10 euro to get you to Getreidegasse.
Stroll to the end and take the funichular up to the fortress. There's a Stiegl cafe up there if you want to grab a drink with some spectacular views. For lunch, you could take the short walk to Restaurant Stieglkeller which has a nice balcony area but if you want to head toward Augustiner, Bärenwirt will work well too...as will Braugasthof Krimpelstätter just down the block from Kloster-Mulln. It's also a great pre-game spot before the Augustiner garten opens.
Bob had some great tips for a first-timer. It's a ton of locals, but with any luck you can find a table outside or if weather is bad, one of the bierhalls should work fine too.
That's my favorite biergarten anywhere in the world ...Hope y'all have a great day-trip!
