The belt runs the alternator and a/c. If the belt was a little stretchy, and the a/c compressor pulley is seizing, the alternator pulley may have been slipping and working the alternator too hard.
Make sure the a/c clutch engages when the a/c is turned on and that the a/c pulley is turning properly. See if any compressor oil has been slung on the underside of the hood. If seizing, may need new compressor $$$
Check cycle switch as stated above.
