ETA: I also don't see how you can grade the Montgomery trade any other way than an F.

I don't see how you can grade it until we see Bader play.

If the Yankees think his offense plays up in Yankee Stadium (everyone's does to a point, but some people absolutely pop off when they move there) or if they think there is something in his swing or approach they can fix to get more out of him, you've got an elite athlete at center who will give you good to great defense plus speed on the basepaths.

Montgomery has been very inconsistent in his career.

Yankees could of course use Montgomery now, but this isn't a move for this season, its a long term thing.

Not the best slate this weekend, but there’s a few series with playoff implications…particularly the AL Wild Card

Mets host Philly- both teams have been scorching hot

Brewers and cards a huge series obviously

Cleveland visits Toronto while Tampa hosts Baltimore

I’m sure Yankees/Red Sox will still receive the most coverage though

Bader probably isn't playing this season, it's an F considering the Yankees were WS favorites

Which undoubtedly did not sit very well in the clubhouse. Bader probably isn't going to play this season. Montgomery would have made 12 more starts for the Yankees down the stretch. Players like to see moves that are going to help the team win now.

Also, Montgomery had some hard luck outings in the first half of this season. If I recall correctly, he had an ERA just above 3.00 the first half of the season but only had 3 wins (pretty impossible with how hot the Yankees were as a team). Also he was a guy that was going to go out there and give you 6 innings the vast majority of his starts. He had dipped a bit in his last couple starts as a Yankee, but he has been fantastic in his first two appearances for St. Louis. The Yankees certainly could have used him down the stretch.
