I think what he’s saying is yes, of course people care more if their loved one is in a tragic accident compared to a random person. Nobody should say that out loud in a press conference, but with that type of thing being incredibly common and something that everyone has to deal with, it’s kind of inherent.
This situation here is SO specific, rare, and dire. So much so that we can all name a dude who was just stuck over there. We’ve seen his mom crying on TV.
When saying it about a victim of an extremely common occurrence, you’re not talking about anyone specific at all. Although you should probably still be a bit sensitive.
When saying it about being a falsely accused American stuck in a Russian prison you definitely shouldn’t say what she did. Like ok, uhh, who you talking about here, Skylar? It just seems way too specific to be like, “look, this isn’t that other person, this is Brittney!”
Then add the political stuff like people in Skylar’s circle/on her “side” doing the usual woke black lesbian shite making it seem like Griner is more important or needs more attention and then it’s really going to give people pause when Diggins is all like, “this isn’t just someone else.”
Then add that this is all Griner’s fault and most people on earth know not to smuggle drugs into Russia and then we’re REALLY like, “ok shut up Skylar.”

I've already said it's not a good look but we all do that. So again, what's the true point of getting mad at her just saying our loud what we all know and live by? Seems silly, but not as silly as Drewbie believing your quote was real, know what I'm saying?
