Was there. 15 minutes from my hometown. Until the very last night it was perfectly fine and a blast. Most people went into the local town to stock up on food, water etc. Even the last night wasn't that bad and it was cool as frick seeing the national guard stroll on by.
The criticism was stirred up out of thin air by a media that hated the fact that from the outside looking in it was a toxic masculinity fest (which is kind of was with Korn, Limp Bizkit, DMX etc.) and not a hippie snooze fest.
Yes there were some assaults and rapes but nothing out of an ordinary compared to a city of 300,000. And most cities don't have people packed together like sardines. All things considered 95% of the people were well behaved 95% of the time.

I hated to see it.
I was at the 1994 one in Saugerties, NY, and it was a great experience.
Looking back, even though I felt this at the time, it kind of helped define the line between Gen. X and Get Y.
Gen. X was still "hippie" enough to pull it off successfully.
Gen. Y, well, the results speak for themselves.
Sorry, bros.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

I was there and agree. The rioting started at the very end during RHCP. The vibe turned really bad very fast. People started building large fires. The vendors all got beaten up and looted. Every dude who wasn’t into violence and any girl with any shred of sense walked out. I let my stuff behind, too.
It was cool watching the National Guard file past like 6 hours later. I watched the thing burn from a distance. I was an 18 year old girl, and I’d always thought a riot would be a bad arse time. Woodstock 99 changed my opinion.
