What's not helping control the population, as far as Texas is concerned, is the fact that all of the land is privately owned and you have to pay 400-600 dollars on the cheap end to go and shoot 2-3 hogs. If the hogs damage farmer's crops they simply file a claim and receive payments for the damaged crop. So, there is nothing incentivizing the land owners to release the flood gates on hog control because either way they are getting paid. Poison would just be stupid and such a waste.

I was about to post that same thing. I live in Texas and would love to go shoot hogs. I’d do it for free. But like you say, all the land is private and nobody is inviting me to do it besides the ranches that charge $300 just to show up and then $1 per pound for every hog killed.

I took my son hog hunting in June at a ranch outside Seguin. Had a great time but I spent $1,000 just to shoot 6 pigs.
