Because pilots and flight attendants start getting paid once they leave the gate

I just don’t understand why they can’t deplane and then let them back on when ready
When it happened to me (sat for about 1.5 hours) they had pushed back from the gate while doing maintenance so another plane could have the gate. The busy airports are so heavily scheduled that they don't want to disrupt any other flights and would rather just have one plane of seriously pissed off people. When it happened to me (about 30 years ago), they herded us off plane to a holding room with no food, drinks, and only 2 pay phone. We were in a room on the ground level as we deplaned down a set of stairs and not the jetway to a gate.
It was awful and even back then everyone on the plane was compensated. If you wrote them a complaining email, you got compensated more. It sucked.
