I believe one of the reasons governments are pushing so hard for electric cars is to have this type of control over the populace.
It'll be sold as a safety measure to prevent high-speed chases and cars from entering dangerous situations.
China Virus 2040, they'll push out an update that keeps your car from starting. You go nowhere.

Cars don’t have to be electric for this to happen. OnStar been disabling cars for almost a decade when the cops ask.
