Depending on the size of the ditch, veg, soil type, etc., you may need put down some geotextile before placing the rip-rap so the rocks don't sink.
I was thinking about this also. The soil in the area is pretty firm and the ditches are too steep for any traffic. I don't think the rocks sinking will be an issue, but I am concerned about the soil continuing to wash underneath the rock..I was thinking about putting down some surge stone (2-3" gravel base in local terms) underneath the rip-rap...I think I can get it cheaper than the geotextile material...Plus I don't know of a local source for it.
