I think Disney wanted to use a southern IP to replace sound of the south.

Don’t you mean black? And it was a retcon of a German fairytale written and directed by two white guys that had some pretty shitty stereotypes. While the Br’er characters were based on folk tales told by former slaves. Which one is more racist?
