It was coverage failures by media.

After Lyles won the 200 and USA swept, I turned over to ESPN to see if they were talking about it on Sportscenter.... They were airing 10 minutes of WNBA coverage over some chick retiring.

It would have been hilarious if it weren't so sad. Espn barely even acknowledged that the event was even taking place and barely even showed the results on their scroll.

If the media wants to blend anyone, though, blame NBC first and foremost for airing the event around on different networks and airing most of the big events at like 10 pm Eastern and airing shite like Indy car on the weekends over track coverage.

I could also see a lot of international media sending skeleton crews as well because of how remote and limited the Eugene site is.

If it were in NY or LA, I'm sure more media attention would have been placed on it but Oregon has the stadium.

I said from the beginning of them building the new heyward field that they needed to leave the old one alone and build the stadium in Portland/Beaverton. It would’ve helped this event out greatly.

I think it is because ESPN will always focus on the leagues that they have the rights to.

It’s why hockey coverage has fallen in the past few decades, for example.

Certain events are too big to ignore like the Olympics and World Cup.

However, world championships and diamond league meets are much easier to give only cursory coverage to.

As for the dorms, if they are anything like the dorms built by most colleges in the last 15 years, I’m sure the athletes were quite satisfied. And I suspect that these are probably even nicer than the average new dorms.

Media coverage was definitely the biggest issue with these games but it’s something somewhat out of the organizers’ control.

The one thing I was annoyed by was how they did two days on tape delay and how the coverage jumped around between three channels on the weekends.

As for Noah’s complaint, it’s all about time zones. They were never going to put a weekday event in the late afternoon in the host city.
