So ... what ought the sheriff do in the hours/days until ICE responds? Detain a suspect and be accused of nefarious actions?

If a truck-load of obvious illegal immigrants is driving through a county, the sheriff should take zero action, apart from contacting ICE?

My bet is you and I are likely on the same page, in terms of what is typically right and/or wrong in life; but on this issue, I'll agree to disagree with you.

They should treat them the exact same as every other criminal they encounter. Arrest them, charge them, arraign them, then prosecute them for the state laws they broke.

I don’t disagree with your take that it’s frustrating for local law enforcement but ICE struggles with properly interpreting immigration law, there’s 0% chance small town PD won’t screw it up. It would be an absolute cluster, and realistically would lead to some serious profiling issues.

I know my immigration stance is vastly different than the majority of this board, it’s part of the reason I stopped posting as much since there’s little room for dissent even when I’m 98% in agreement. I do appreciate your willingness to have civil discourse.
